Which Autoresponder Solution Is Right for You?

This article is Part 8 of a 10-part series on Email Marketing: Self-Hosted vs Traditional Cloud-Hosted Options.

We’ve taken a close look at the benefits of hosted email marketing software and also explored the self-hosted advantages and disadvantages. Here’s a very quick summary of our experience and a quick flowchart that will help you choose the solution that is right for you and your business.

  • Reduced long-term costs.
  • More customisation options.
  • Ability to embed images.
  • Ability to send attachments.
  • No restrictions on database uploads.
  • No terms of service restrictions.
  • Ability to send “trigger” messages.
  • Greater setup costs.
  • Complexity of installing and administering your system.
  • Need to maintain relationship with ISPs.
  • Little administration required.
  • No need to maintain relationship with ISPs.
  • Guaranteed delivery levels.
  • Easy access to metric tools.
  • Easy to calculate costs.
  • Easy integration with other platforms.
  • Quick and easy setup.
  • Can get expensive once your list reaches a certain size.
  • Harder to manage online reputation.
  • No control over security.
  • Limited customisation options.
  • Terms of service restrictions.

For our team, we decided that the self-hosted route is the best way forward right now. This is because, over time, our requirements have changed in line with our business development. We have more customers and subscribers than we would ever have anticipated when we set out using a cloud-based hosted solution and this means that it’s more important for us to be able to control our online marketing activities, make sure we keep on delivering reliable customer service, and have more options for customisation and add-ons, such as the ability to send attachments.

    Thanks for you note.

If you have not checked out the new kid on the block please do.

They offer substantially more features and benefits for the email marketer and for a short period of time they have an opportunity to get a one payment life time membership. That is right no more monthly payments for emails sent.

Shortly they will be going public and will then price themselves at the top of the email service providers. But then they offer substantially more.

check them out. Yes this is my link but hey it is no different then yourself.

Looks interesting Brian. Thanks for sharing!

So it’s a fully cloud hosted solution correct?

Do they have a trial or demo option, so we can have a play around?

(and your reference to “going public”: You mean being available to the public, not doing an IPO correct?)

Pete Williams is an entrepreneur, author, and marketer from Melbourne, Australia.

Before being honored “Australia’s Richard Branson” in media publications all over the continent, Pete was just 21 years old when he sold Australia’s version of Yankee Stadium, The Melbourne Cricket Ground For Under $500! Don’t believe it? You will! Check out the story in the FAQ section (it really is our most asked question).

Since then, he’s done some cool stuff like write the international smash hit ‘How to Turn Your Million-Dollar Idea Into a Reality’ (+ the upcoming ‘It’s Not About the Product‘) and he’s created a bunch of companies including Infiniti Telecommunications, On Hold Advertising, Simply Headsets and Preneur Group.

Lots of other people think he’s pretty good too! He’s been announced as the Global Runner-Up in the JCI Creative Young Entrepreneur Awards for 2009, the Southern Region Finalist in the Ernst & Young 2010 Entrepreneur of the Year, and a member of SmartCompany’s Top 30 Under 30.
